Around people showed up to the event, about half being UB affiliated, and the other half from the community. The fourth floor now provided extra space for studios that was ultimately used for storage before the restoration. This extra space gained made it possible to create a larger, open space in place of the then cramped lobby. Being able to remove the classrooms on either sides of it on entry and to open the first floor to the second floor creates a great exhibition opportunity, a welcome for the students here but also to the community.
The clock tower which had not been working for 30 years, was now repaired, ringing every quarter hour now. The roof, exterior windows, elevator, stairways, ceilings, lighting systems, interior floor slabs, and walls were replaced.
The inside of Hayes was practically all gutted for a more sustainable design, while the exterior focused entirely on preserving the historic appearance. The bells heard all around South campus.

Then fire stairs, sprinkler systems, ADA accessible ramps, and fire exits were added to make the building up to NYS code. Hayes Hall is roughly 80, SF with 4 main floors and currently an unused basement level and restricted clock tower.
Hayes remains the home of The School of Architecture and Planning, with most faculty members having offices in Hayes along with several computer labs, studios, exhibition spaces, classrooms, and still only one lecture room: room But the belfry clock tower is considered to be more of a Baroque Revival style; similar to the Renaissance style, but more odd with eccentric redundancy and abundance to details. The clock towers details reveal projecting modillion cornices green , accompanied by dentils red underneath, supported by Ionic pilasters purple with volutes dark purple on top and a keystone window arch blue.
The main North-West entrance also features Ionic pilasters purple on the main level, contrasting with Corinthian pilasters red on the levels above and keystone arches blue with modern windows along the whole facade.
Along the main level are more cornices signifying the entrances, with ancones and historic sconces underneath for light. Notify me of new posts via email. I did a bad thing once. The corpses were supposed to be removed when the university bought the property, but many of these graves were unmarked during the cholera outbreaks in the mid-nineteenth century. Apparently the Buffalo Medical Journal claimed that during the cholera epidemic the mental institute tried to hide as many deaths as possible by not recording who died and where they were buried.
When workers broke ground in while constructing Clement and Goodyear Halls, several of these forgotten graves were unearthed exposing a skull, torso, and various other human bones.
